Overview

L.A.S.A. Pods are AI-assisted headphones created in the context of assistive technology, offering an omnichannel experience orchestrated by a conversational agent. The challenge of this second-year Interaction Design project was to create the personality of an empathetic virtual assistant. It was developed with Aline dos Santos, Arthur Padilha and Sara Neves.

1.Design Challenge

Create the personality of an empathetic virtual assistant. We started by researching conversational interfaces and how empathy can be built into an assistant: recognizing emotions, adapting language and tone, and offering support.

2.AI Personality

We compared four common AI personalities: the Challenger, the Helper, the Entertainer and the Investigator. We chose the Entertainer: Lasa is friendly, proactive, respectful and playful, and users can choose her voice, intonation and style.

3.User Research

We surveyed people aged 16 to 60 about voice assistants, trust in GPS headphones, tourist-guide information, music matched to emotions and waterproof headphones. Answers pointed to more human responses, better voice recognition and adapting to each person.

4.Research Wall and Brainstorming

A mind map of existing smart headphones (noise cancellation, heart-rate monitoring, GPS, waterproofing and more) fed our brainstorming, which also explored a universal translator and a voice-controlled organizer.

5.Concept and Inclusion

L.A.S.A. Pods are built on inclusion and personalization: a palette that covers a wide range of skin tones helps the headphones blend in and stay discreet.

6.Conceptual Diagram

We mapped the system as an app (customization, Bluetooth, compass, translator, radio, GPS, calls) and a device with sensors, a microphone, alert lights, Wi-Fi, the Lasa AI, audio outputs and a charging case.

7.Personas, Journey and User Flow

User personas, a journey map and a touchpoint inventory covered the whole experience, from searching for and buying the headphones to pairing, installing the app and everyday use. A user flow connected these steps.

8.Sketches and Prototype

We sketched the product and the app, and I designed the prototype in Figma. Open the prototype.

Process

Discover, define, ideate, design and prototype: user research, personas and an AI persona, user story and journey map, information architecture, user flow, wireframes and accessibility considerations.

Why it mattered

This project was a turning point in discovering my interest in UX/UI design.

Main Features

The concept brings together:

Voice assistant:
Lasa answers questions through natural conversation.
Navigation:
GPS directions through voice commands.
Translator and guide:
Translation and cultural information, like a tourist guide.
Wellbeing:
Heart-rate and temperature sensors, with music matched to emotions explored as a feature.

Conclusion

L.A.S.A. Pods combine artificial intelligence with an everyday product. The goal is for the assistant to become more than a tool: a companion that makes the experience more engaging and useful in daily life.
